Wedding DJ FAQs

Browse through our most commonly asked questions below to find out everything you need to know about hiring a professional wedding DJ.

What does a wedding DJ do?

If you're looking to book entertainment for your wedding and don't have the space or budget for a live band, then a professional wedding DJ is the perfect solution.

DJs offer affordable packages and have access to an almost unlimited catalogue of songs. A talented wedding DJ will entertain your guests with classic tracks on the dance floor all night.

How Much Does a Wedding DJ cost?

Professional wedding DJ prices vary, but on average, expect to pay anywhere between £500-700 for your evening entertainment.

If you're looking for an all-day hire, prices will increase to cover the Dj's additional working hours. They may also be required to move locations throughout the venue. For all-day packages and to hire a DJ with some renown, expect to pay up to and above £1000.

Do wedding DJs accept song requests on the night?

In a nutshell, yes. When booking a wedding DJ through Bands For Hire, you'll get to liaise with your chosen DJ to discuss what musical genres they'll play and the overall musical vibe you're looking for. For example, hip-hop hits from the 80s, old-school classics, party anthems or a little bit of everything.

Common nowadays is for a DJ to use a streaming service to DJ. If there's WiFi at the venue, they'll have access to a library of millions of songs, so rest assured you'll be able to request that obscure song no one else has heard of!

Can I book a DJ for Daytime Entertainment?

Not only is a DJ perfect for getting the party started in the evening, they can also just as easily set the mood for a chilled afternoon wedding reception.

As well as the evening reception, our DJs offer bespoke packages to offer wedding entertainment for wedding couples during the wedding breakfast and even a wedding ceremony or civil ceremony.

Do DJs provide all their own equipment?

You'll find that most wedding DJs provide all their own latest high-tech equipment, such as PA speakers and disco lighting. Certain DJs only provide the music they play and will require everything provided at the venue.

This is always made known when receiving a quotation, and we're always happy to help with the technical requirements to ensure everything's compatible. Some of the best DJs offer additional extras, such as more high-tech lighting equipment and larger PA systems for increased audio fidelity.

Should I book a Wedding Band or a DJ?

Deciding on what type of musical entertainment you want for your event, be it live musicians or an electronic DJ, can be daunting. There are certain things to consider when choosing between the two, such as budget constraints, available space at the venue, and what sound restrictions the venue might have, for example. check out our wedding band vs DJ guide for more info.

If you love the sound of live music but are also set on a wedding DJ, why not get the best of both worlds by hiring a DJ accompanied by live musicians? Head on over to our DJ Live section to see our DJ combos in action.

If you've already booked a live wedding band, hiring a DJ on top can be the perfect compliment to keep guests entertained.

Can a professional wedding DJ perform with live musicians?

If you love the sound of live music but are also set on a wedding DJ, why not get the best of both worlds by hiring a DJ accompanied by live musicians? Head on over to our DJ Live page to see our DJ combos in action.

Do your DJs have Public Liability Insurance and PAT-tested equipment as standard?

Yes, all the DJs on our roster are covered with Public Liability Insurance and have all their gear annually PAT tested.

Your wedding venue may ask for proof of this, and we're always happy to email copies to you or the venue directly before the event date.

Can I book additional musicians to perform alongside the DJ?

Recently taking the wedding entertainment scene by storm is the DJ/Sax combo. From La Palma to Ibiza, island vibes are the name of the game.

Why not add a rhythmical element to your DJ hire? Some of our DJs offer this as an optional extra and include live percussion instruments such as bongos and sample pads. Often, these are lit up with multi-coloured LEDs to add a visual wow factor.

How much space does a wedding disco need?

To be on the safe side, it’s best to dedicate a specific area away from guests to accommodate the DJ and their equipment. 3 x 2 meters is a good rule of thumb when planning where the DJ will set up and perform.

Will the DJ be happy to Make Announcements?

DJs expect to be present to make specific announcements, for example, letting guests know that evening food will shortly be served at a wedding.

If you want your DJ to make a specific announcement on the day, then get in touch in advance, so this can be arranged.

What parts of the country do your DJs cover?

If you're looking for a talented DJ in the UK, then we have acts based throughout the country ready to light up any venue and keep your guests dancing.

How long does a DJ set typically last?

Most wedding DJs will offer a bespoke quote to cover your entire evening's entertainment. If booking for an evening party, you’ll generally want to book a 4-5 hour time slot.

Some specialist DJs may quote for set 3-4 hour periods.

Will the DJ be able to work with my venue's sound restrictions?

The best wedding DJs can adapt and work with venues if they have any sound restrictions, as they can easily control the master volume from their mixing desk.

During setup and soundcheck, the DJ will always make sure all the levels are set correctly and to ensure that the venue is happy with the overall sound.

Can a Wedding DJ play my First Dance?

Yes, our DJs will be more than happy to play your First Dance song or any other wedding songs you may have. Get in touch before the date to make sure the DJ has the song pre-loaded.

Will I need to provide food and drink?

DJs request that they be provided with water or soft drinks throughout their stay at the venue. Depending on what time of day they are booked for, they may also ask for a basic supplier meal to be provided to keep them going.

How Long Does it take a professional DJ to Setup?

Most DJs need 30-60 minutes to get everything plugged in and ready to go.

What will the DJ Wear?

The DJ will typically come smarlty dressed or as they appear on their promotional material. If the event is themed, then most DJs will be happy to wear suitable clothing to match.

How Far in Advanced Should I Book?

For peak dates, it's always best to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment. We recommend about 9-12 months in advance.

The busiest times of the year are throughout the Summer and Christmas.
